BELLE CHASSE, La. (WGNO) – The Marine Phoenix is traveling up the Mississippi River to New Orleans, Thursday. The ship was in a holding pattern in Belle Chasse overnight, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed sick crew members evacuated from the oil tanker have malaria.

The Marine Phoenix arrived at Belle Chasse around 3 p.m. Wednesday. It came from the Democratic Republic of Congo in western Africa, where countries are dealing with a historic Ebola outbreak.

Officials say up to four crew members and one river boat pilot were taken by ambulance to West Jefferson Medical Center, where staff implemented full safety precautions. EMS workers also wore protective suits.

Here’s video of the ship travel upstream. Harbor police said it will dock at the Jourdan Road Terminal in the 9th Ward.
